For the month of February we will be learning all about habit 5: seek first to understand then be understood. We will have an assembly to kick start this new habit. This habit is all about empathetic listening. Listening with the attempt to understand where someone is coming from, before telling them your side or advice.

Note from Gym Teacher Mr. Guell:

Next week Monday we will have our rollerblading safety talk and hand out items for Kids Heart Challenge.

Please help remind the students to label any equipment they bring in a labeled bag as well. Please send a reminder home if possible about bringing in their equipment (helmet and pads).

Kids Heart Challenge is an optional online only fundraiser for the American Heart Association that will run through the month of February. More info to follow.

1/24 to 1/28

 Protocols for our classroom:

On 1/22/22 the Kaukauna Area School District was notified that two additional individuals in  Mrs. Tuma’s 2nd Grade class at New Directions have tested positive for COVID-19.  At least one individual last attended school on 1/21/22. This makes 3 positive tests from this classroom in a short period of time; because of this Mrs. Tuma’s classroom will be required to wear face coverings through 1/31/22. We will begin the face covering requirement on 1/25/22.

We will be monitoring this situation very closely and will continue to keep you informed .  Should further cases in this classroom develop, we will explore other potential mitigation measures, including the potential for virtual learning for a prescribed time.

As a result of this information, we please ask that you do the following:

  1. Assess your student for any symptoms of COVID-19; even very mild symptoms should be considered a possible positive case.  Please refer to the daily health screening for further information on assessing your student.

  2. If your student develops any symptoms listed on our daily health screening, please keep your student home from school, follow the typical absence procedure, and indicate the reason you are keeping your student home.  One of the district nurses will contact you to discuss possible next steps.

  3. We encourage you to get your student tested. Please contact your physician or the health office at your student’s school if your child is exhibiting symptoms.  The district does have COVID-19 testing available.

Valentine’s Day

Our Valentine’s Day celebration is right around the corner. We will be celebrating on Monday February 14th, 2022. In order to have some extra fun at home, students can decorate a card box. You can decorate it however you would like, feel free to use stickers, wrapping paper, glitter, and anything else! I have some extra boxes or white lunch bags if you would like me to send them home or they will have time the day of, to make one. Please make sure their “mailbox” has their name printed clearly on it so other kids can find it easily.

Please make sure to make one valentine per student. But of course this is all optional! We have 21 students. I will send a sheet home with a list of your child’s classmates. Let me know if you have any questions.

Leader In Me

This week we will be talking about Emotional Bank Accounts.  When we treat others the way we want to be treated, we make deposits in their Emotional Bank Account.  When we treat others badly, we make withdrawals from the Emotional Bank Account.  When a leader makes a deposit into other Emotional Bank Accounts, it is a win-win!

Talk as a family about things you can do to deposit into others Emotional Bank Account.

Gym News

Hello parents, it’s that time of the year again to start the excitement of rollerblading in physical education classes. While equipment is provided by the district, if your student has any equipment that they want to bring to school it would be appreciated. Equipment used are rollerblades, knee and elbow pads, helmets, and wrist guards. Students with their own helmet won’t have to wear hair nets. Equipment is sprayed with a disinfectant between classes. A second pair of socks on physical education days are encouraged.

Mr. Guell’s classes will start on Monday January 31st and finish up on Friday February 18th.

Mr. Guell’s classes: Streck, Burris, VandeWettering, Kocourek, Karls, Tuma

Thank you, and happy blading!

Mr. Guell and Mr. Halloran

Reading

In reading we continue to work on growing strategies to tackle longer books.  We are learning that reading the same book as a partner can help us.  Partners can set goals together, talk about confusing parts, and talk about parts of the story.

Writing

We continue our work in our Poetry Unit.  Students are learning many craft moves to strengthen their poems, such as: the use of repeating lines, using exact/precise words, creating a mood to be felt through the poem, and using comparisons.

You're’ Invited to our Virtual Poetry Cafe.

When: Friday, February 4th from 10:15-10:45

What: It is a poetry open mic. Students will be sharing their favorite poems/songs

they have written with the class and with any of you that are able to join virtually!

How: Here is the link to join: https://meet.google.com/nud-tphm-jrx

You can join at any time. The students will be presenting in no particular

order and we encourage you to stay to listen to as many poets as you can.

Leader in Me:

This month our focus is on Think Win-Win. Last week our class was learning how to say, “No Deal!” to bullying. This week we will talk about using courage and consideration when feeling pressured to do things you know aren’t right. You could ask your child, “How can you use courage and consideration when you are feeling pressured?”

An example of having courage is when a friend always wants to be first when working together.  Oftentimes, the partner will say okay.  We will teach students to have the courage to use their voice, in a considerate way, to let their partner know they would like to try to be first once.

Math:

In math we have been learning that there are a lot of ways to solve subtraction problems! With our math homework this week I will send home the chart we have been creating that has different ways to solve problems. This week we are going to work on finding a strategy that we understand and works for us! Let me know how the math homework goes at home or if you have any questions!

Reading and writing:

Our reading and writing unit tie together beautifully right now! We have been on the lookout for literary language in our books that we are reading, specifically comparisons, similes, cool things that authors do that make us stop and think! In writing we have been writing poems. We have been learning ways to make our poems strong and stronger. One way is by trying out some literary language in our poems; comparisons, similes, personification, and alliteration. A lot of fun new things to try!

iReady:

This week we will be taking our midyear assessment, in iReady.  Students will take a math and reading portion.  This is a tool to help us, the teachers, see where students are at.

What can you do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.

  • Get a good night's sleep

  • Try not to worry about questions they do not know--

  • Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.

  • BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES!!!

Environmental Club Project:

NDLC will be collecting your Little Bites bags from now until May! The Entenmann company has a collection service where if you send in a box of recycled Little Bites bags they will give you money for your organization. It's a nice way to raise money for our school for recycling!

Here are examples of what we are collecting:

Send the empty bags to school and we will take care of the rest!

Thanks,

NDLC Environmental Club

Leader in Me:

Our habit that we will focus on in the month of January is Think Win-Win. Here is a resource for families that include some books that you could read to discuss using think win-win to resolve conflict.

Happy 2022!

 Hello,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break. I was excited to get back to the students, January, February, March is always a time where I see huge growth in students learning!

Upcoming Events:

  • 1/21: Early Release
  • 1/24: No School
Spelling Words This Week:

Leader In Me

We will start the first week back reviewing the 7 Habits of highly effective people.  We will look for them around our school and classroom.  We will talk about what they mean.

We will also spend the first week back talking about how we want people to see us.  What would be one word we want to represent us.  Each student can come up with their own words.  I would love for you to have some conversation with your student at home about this! Maybe it’s something your whole family wants to do.  We are going to use this word to help us reflect and grow for the rest of the school year.  For example, when we are setting goals or solving conflict we will look to see how we can shine through our word.

Math

In math we are jumping right into a harder unit.  We will start the unit review money and then quickly heading into subtracting multi digit numbers.

A great way to support your student with money is by taking out a handful of change and having them count it.  They are working with Quarters, Nickels, Dimes, and Pennies.  Students can practice writing the total with dollar/cent notation.

Writing

We will start a Poetry Unit.  We will be learning about seeing things through the eye of a poet (differently), using line breaks to create rhythm, and picking ideas that give us Big Feelings.  This is always an exciting unit!

Reading

We are also going into a new reading unit.  In this unit we will: work on fluency, stop to notice and understand literary language, track events across longer books, and learn different strategies chapter book readers do when they are starting and stopping the same book.
