Fieldtrip

We are planning a field trip to Building for Kids in Appleton.  Paperwork is coming home Monday, Please look it over and send it back by next Monday, December 6th!

Writing Collection:

We are quickly preparing for a new Unit of Study in Writing, that will start right after the break.  In our new unit the students will be learning how to share their opinion through writing.  To help students formulate an opinion we would like each student to bring in a collection of 4 to 5 things.

We hope that students can have their collection to school NO LATER than Wednesday, December 1st.  You can send the collection to school in a shoe box or bag that will fit into your child’s backpack.   The collection will stay at school for about two weeks.

Examples of a collection might be: Ninja Turtles, Barbie’s, Hair Clips, bracelets, Pokémon Cards, favorite books….the possibilities are endless.

Thank you for your support in preparing for our next writing unit.

Leader in Me: Last week in Leader in Me we talked about setting Achievable and Measurable Goals.  We are really good at goal setting.  We often say, I am going to read more or I will do more chores.  Yet, without an achievable and measurable goal, it’s hard to follow through.  So instead we can set a goal that sounds like: I will read for 20 minutes right when I get home from school. Or, after I am finished reading I will do one chore from my chore chart.  When we are specific and have a vision for what that goal will look like, we are more likely to meet it.

Help your student set some achievable and measurable goals at home that will build success for them and your family!

SeeSaw: Your student created a SeeSaw for Parent Teacher Conferences. I think I fixed issues we had at the start of the year. Please take a few minutes to watch them.  Let me know if you are having any troubles getting onto SeeSaw.

Videos to watch:

Dances from Gym Class

Veterans Day Concert

Reading/Writing:

This week we will be wrapping up our Nonfiction Unit in both reading and writing.  In reading we have spent the last part of the unit reading text sets (3-4 books on the same topic) to grow our knowledge.  In writing we are spending the last part of the unit thinking about how we can write about the same topic in different ways: narrative nonfiction, how-to’s, all about books, or question and answer books!

Note from Mrs. Duda:

Mrs. Duda was at a conference last week and received some great new information that she asked us to share with families.  Take a look, talk to your student about it, and set goals/boundaries around screen time.

They will also send a reminder email with that link before your conference. I’m excited to meet with everyone and discuss their progress so far this year.

It is not too late to fill out the survey to help guide our conference!

Leader in Me:

This month we started to talk about Habit Number 2: Begin with the End in Mind. This week in Leader in Me we focused on what matters most to us. We talked about what matters most to us.  Many students' initial thought is to name things like: minecraft, their toys, and other material things.  While those things are very significant to them, at this age, we talked about things like family, kindness, hard work, neatness, perseverance, and other qualities that go with us wherever we are, in whatever we are focusing on.

Math:

We started our unit talking about place value: ones, tens, and hundreds.  Students are reading and writing numbers up to 200.  In addition we are adding double digit numbers by double digit numbers (52 + 23=). We are using place value to help us understand this process of adding double digit numbers.

There are many ways students are solving these problems.  We want students to understand the why before they jump to the how.

--Students are building the two with base-10 blocks and adding them together

--Students are drawing out the base-10 blocks and adding them together

--Students are adding the tens place and then ones place

You will receive an email to schedule conferences on Tuesday, November 2nd. In addition we would like you to fill out a survey, sent home today (11/1), and return it ASAP.  The purpose of this survey is to help guide our time together at conferences.
