Writing

In writing we are finishing up our Opinion Unit.  Up until now, students have been writing letters that are convincing others of books they can/should read. For this last week in this unit we will be mailing out letters to our favorite authors.

We hope to receive some responses from authors before the end of the year!

SeeSaw

Your student posted a reflection video on SeeSaw for conferences last week. If you are having a hard time getting on SeeSaw, please let me know and I will re-invite you!

Thank You!!

Thank you for meeting with me last week for conferences. It is a great time to connect with you and to talk about a lot of great progress that students have had this year.

In addition, I would like to extend a thanks to all chaperones who volunteered to come with on Friday to Discovery Paper.  It was a great experience!

We will be working closely with the creators to give our feedback on their new units. They work with Heinemann as their publishing company and I will be sending home a student release form if you are comfortable with the potential of them using your child's writing in their new curriculum. Please sign and return as soon as possible, we will be starting the pilot unit soon! Thanks!

Conferences:

Conferences are this week on Tuesday and Thursday night, virtually.  I look forward to meeting with families to celebrate the growth of your student. Here is the link to click on at your conference time: meet.google.com/zfh-pizs-gkb

This week your student will create a video on Seesaw with some reflections from this year so far!

Leader In Me:

This week our Leader In Me focus is around humility.  Students will learn that humility is not thinking we are better than other people.  A humble leader is secure enough to recognize his or her weaknesses and to see the input and talents of others.

Reading

In reading we are working in book clubs.  Students are reading across series to get to know the characters of their books better. Each day students meet with their book clubs to set goals, read, and come prepared with thoughts to share and build conversation.  Students are excited and engaged to have such responsibilities.  It is fun to hear the conversations these students have with one another.  Ask your student what book they are reading for their book club this week!

Leader In Me

We had our All-School Virtual Assembly on Friday, featuring Synergy.  We got to see a great video on how Mrs. Krueger and her crew work at Cafe Krueger.  If you haven’t heard, this is something that started shortly after the New Year.  Mrs. Krueger runs a Cafe with the help of her 3rd and 4th Grade employees.  It’s such a happy part of our school and something for the 2nd graders to look forward to.

This week we are going to take a detour and focus on Kindness.  We will talk about how kindness connects to synergy.  It is that time of the year where everyone is getting very comfortable with one another and many of us are starting to treat each other like brothers and sisters.  Along with that comes the comfort of arguments and sassiness.

Music Concert Reminder:

Just a reminder that the 2nd grade concert is coming up on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30pm. Students should arrive for the concert at 6:10pm and report to their classroom.  Guests should be seated in the gym. Students should dress in something nice if possible. The concert is live, and there is no limit to the number of guests each student can bring.

Math

Unit Assessments will be coming home at the start of the week.   As a district, 2nd grade, skips to Unit 7 and will come back to Unit 6.  Students will be studying arrays, equal shares, and adding and subtracting length.

We have been starting our math time with lots of work with fluency, if you wanted to support this work at home, here are a few great math sites/apps that you could use for your student:

–E-Spark

–DreamBox (This is a purchased app but phenomenal.  It adjusts based on students' level.)

We have found that Prodigy wasn’t all we wanted it to be.  It’s much more game-like than mathematical.

Reading

Reminder, your child should be reading each night for 20 minutes.  I know this can be tricky as the weather warms up.  I am not hovering over the students as much as they pack up their book bags each night.  Some tell me they have books at home so they don’t bring books home.  If you find your child is without books please talk to them first, then reach out to me if needed.

Writing

Students created a Seesaw video to end our Realistic Fiction Unit last week. I hope you had the chance to watch the video.  It was so fun for students to reflect on their writing, from the first week of school, to their most recent pieces.  The students have made so much growth.  We took the time to talk about how reflection can help us move forward and feel proud of all we have accomplished.

Look for student writing pieces to come home this week from the Realistic Fiction Unit.  We are now headed back to opinion writing. We will be writing and recommending our favorite books.  It is perfect timing for this as our school is doing a March Madness on books selected from each classroom.  Ask your student about the competing books.

Leader In Me

This week we started talking about synergizing with the focus on differences. We spent time talking about our friends' strengths, our strengths, and what makes us different.

Conferences

Conferences are only a few short weeks away.  You should have received a signup from the office.  The district has decided that all schools will have virtual conferences once again.

This week we will send home a conference form for you to fill out, to help guide our conversation the night of conferences.
